The Scouse Narrative, Script & Spirit

The Art of the Scouse Panto: A Liverpool Festive Tradition

When it comes to festive entertainment in Liverpool, nothing captures the raw energy, quick wit, and unique heritage of the city quite like the Royal Court Theatre’s annual Adult Christmas Panto.

For the past decade, Culture Calendar has been supporting the local arts scene, and in the meantime, we have learned that The Royal Court Panto is more than a brilliant night of comedy and chaos – it is regional storytelling, living history, and unwavering community support and connection.

A Masterclass in Local Storytelling

Traditionally, this bold and brilliant annual fixture is packed with outrageous humor, dazzling costumes, and laugh-out-loud moments that are strictly for adults. But look a little closer at the script, and you’ll find the beating heart of Liverpool’s rich oral history.

The Royal Court has mastered the art of the “Scouse narrative”—a genre of creative writing that blends sharp satire, local references, and working-class camaraderie. It’s a theatrical tradition built on the legendary quick wit of the region, making it a vital piece of Merseyside’s modern cultural heritage.

At Culture Calendar, our journey began by bringing women together for shared cultural experiences, and the adult panto was always involved post-theatre dinner and drinks, —allowing arts lovers to mix, mingle, and share their own stories from the main event.

As our business continues to evolve into creative writing, journaling, heritage and podcasting, we look back at these ten years of theatre trips not just as outings, but as essential research into how stories bind us together. The laughter shared in that auditorium is a testament to the power of Liverpool storytelling.
