The Philharmonic ~ Liverpool

I have never had the official backstage Back Stage Tour of the Liverpool Philharmonic. No need.

As a young teenager, my brothers and I sang at The Philharmonic Concert Hall, as part of Knowsley Youth Choir and Orchestra. The Philharmonic is also affectionately known to locals as The Phil.

This is one of the most stunning Art Deco buildings, which is Grade II listed, with acoustics like no other, and founded in the mid 1800’s by music lovers.

As with many Theatres and Concert Halls they are big, but as children it was quite overwhelming to stand on The Philharmonic stage and look out into the sea of faces starring back.  An audience very likely fully of proud Mums and Dad’s, and family members, which included ours. Imagine an auditorium of 1700 seats.

I have been to see several performances at The Philharmonic, but there is performance that immediately comes to mind.

It was a classical music concert, but mid-way, the performances was interrupted to announce the passing of Linda McCartney.   The Orchestra played a piece of music dedicated to her, and the audience fell silent, as they listened and reflected intently. So poignant.

Strange that you can feel such sadness and empathy for someone that you have never met, and yet I am certain that everyone felt that way that night.

As we left The Liverpool Philharmonic that night, the audience weren’t talking so much about the performance, (which I remember as being great), but more about the announcement made mid-way.

So, if you’re someone that likes to join in, and get involved, always take a look on The Philharmonic Concert Hall website. There is so much going on, that you will definitely find something for everyone. 😉
